Uttar Pradesh textile exports: Local capacity and employment

Furthermore, Uttar Pradesh is India’s thirdlargest fabric manufacturer. It contributes roughly 13 per cent of national domestic fabric output.

Moreover, the local apparel and textiles industry supports 1.5 million jobs across the state. Around 200,000 handloom weavers operate here. Another 500,000 powerloom weavers are also based within Uttar Pradesh.

Investment push for global textile hub goal

Meanwhile, the state secured new investment commitments at UP Textile Conclave 2026 in Lucknow. Signed MoUs cover investment proposals worth ₹5,196 crore.

In addition, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath laid out clear industry ambitions. The state aims to build a complete textile value chain inside Uttar Pradesh. This spans fiber to yarn, yarn to fabric, fabric to garment, and finished goods for global markets.

For instance, Uttar Pradesh produces 90 per cent of India’s total carpet output. State officials invite overseas entrepreneurs, investors and exporters for textilesector partnerships. Gautam Buddha Nagar district reached ₹21,000 crore worth of exports in FY26. It holds second position among India’s top export-oriented districts.

Such policy support is set to further lift Uttar Pradesh textile exports in coming fiscal cycles.

GI status and technical textile priorities

Additionally, 17 textile goods from Uttar Pradesh have earned official Geographical Indication (GI) tags. A GI tag certifies goods with unique qualities rooted in local origin and traditional production techniques.

Crucially, state leaders point to rising demand for technical textiles. These products serve defence, healthcare, agriculture and sports industries. Therefore, Uttar Pradesh plans to upgrade technical capabilities beyond conventional textile production.

The state government has already allocated land for textile projects. Target locations include Varanasi, Amroha, Bareilly, Sant Kabir Nagar and Bijnor. Similar land allocation work is ongoing for further sites.
